Step 21: Distract Yourself

Sometimes, when you’re troubled and hurt, you pour yourself into things that can’t hurt back.
— Gentleman's Agreement

The world doesn't stop turning, even when you want it to. Something crummy happens to us everyday. You lost your job. You're fighting with a friend. You spilled coffee on your favorite white shirt. Eventually you'll be filled to the brim with all the negative emotions fighting to take over.

I'm not going to tell you to unpack those feelings. Not going to say you should explore why you're upset. I'm telling you to go for a walk. Go work out. Watch some trash TV. Listen to a funny podcast. TREAT YO SELF.

I keep learning that there are some things I can't change. Some things can't be fixed on my own and it's tiresome to be mentally healthy all the time. My heart, spirit and mind need a vacation from all the work. And that is where entertainment comes into play. Hulu, Youtube and Netflix has been soothing. There's always someone else's problems I can deal with and laugh at.

The lesson for today is to distract yourself. You can't solve everything. Arguably you're not supposed to. (I promise I'm talking to myself too.) When you get to that realization, don't fret. Do something that will keep you in good spirits. You'll be strong enough to deal with those feelings later.
