The Truth About Living Together
This shit is hard. Thank you for reading.
Just playing! Mostly...
When you were first told about relationships and moving in with your partner, what do you remember? Maybe it was that you'll be spending a lot of time together. Or that you'll bond with them on a deeper level. Or even that you'll be having more sex. While all of that can be true, it doesn't paint the full picture. There are millions of little revelations you'll have after moving in. But because no one has time for that, here's 5 truths rarely anyone tells you about what happens after you get the keys to your new shared home.
You have to accept that you won't get what you want.
While your wants still matter, they aren’t the ONLY things that matter. You have a whole other person to accommodate so try to keep that in mind when making decisions about the place you both inhabit.
You'll fight over really stupid things.
It can be something as insignificant as the volume from the TV you’re both watching Netflix on. Or something about where you want shoes to go in your living room can set you two off. Being so close means you get to sweat the small stuff. Don’t do it so often that you forget why you chose to move in together in the first place.
Your home won't be picture perfect.
I still have boxes of books strewn throughout the basement of my home because we just haven’t had the time to get bookcases for them. It’s completely OK to not have your place Pinterest ready. You’re doing the best you can with the time you have.
At least 1 appliance will be broken at some point
Life ain’t perfect and neither will your fridge be. Something is bound to break just because. In those moments, breathe. Don’t yell at your partner about how much you hate the place and go through that list of grievances you have in the back of your head. Find a technician who will fix it that’s in your budget.
You'll consider moving out and then probably won't.
It’s hard sharing space with anyone, especially the person you love. You’ll get to know sides of them you didn’t even know existed but that’s apart of the fun of being in a relationship. When you get there you’ll unpack and chill out with your partner.
As I mentioned earlier, the shit is hard but not impossible. You’ll be going through a new journey when you live with your partner. It’ll teach you about not only them, but some things about yourself. Hopefully you’ll grow from the experience everyday.
